The 45.22-tesla magnet remains just shy of the world record for the world’s strongest magnet.
China apparently launched the world’s strongest magnet for scientific research at a lab in the southeastern town of Hefei, in the Anhui province, a statement from the South China Morning Post discloses.
The magnet is reported to be around the size of a coin, having a diameter of only 33mm. Regardless of its small size, it makes a steady magnetic intensity of 45.22 tesla, which is greater than a million times more potent than the Earth’s magnetic field.
World Record Breaking Magnets
Physicists from the United States National High Magnetic Field Laboratory built a world record 45.5-tesla field in 2019. That being said, these experts did that just with a test magnet that wasn’t chosen for scientific experiments.
The Hefei center has become the greatest steady-state magnetic field that can support scientific research.
The original record was created by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in the US in 1999. Its hybrid magnet created 450,000 gauss [45 tesla], and it has held the record for 23 years.
